Review: Placebo’s Meds

Well, this has been sitting in my head for awhile. While I was in Rome, I had the pleasure of being reconnected with one of my absolute favourite bands from high school, Placebo. They were extraordinarily popular on MuchMusic (in its purely Canadian form, before it became Fuse, spun off the network and went back to its roots.) With painfully androgynous lead singer, Brian Molko, brooding style and necrophilic aesthetic Placebo is a dirty treat. Their newest album, Meds is as avant garde as I remember their sound being all the way back in 9th grade…and I love it.

Opening with the title track, we are quickly seared and shaken right into “Infrared,” my second favourite song on the disc. It’s edgy and rockin’…but not in a cliched kinda way. Nothing too complex, just enjoyable and tinged with a bit of anger. The best song, though is certainly “Follow the Cops Back Home.” It has a depth and beauty that I wasn’t expecting on my first listen…and is positioned as a respite in between the fire of the opening songs and the rest of the tracklist. All in all, a great, great album, I’d say. One you should check out.

The breakdown:

  • Sounds like: Orgy, The Cure, Bright Eyes’ Digital Ash in a Digital Urn
  • Favourite track: “Follow the Cops Back Home”
  • Worst track: “Space Monkey”
  • Overrated: Not really played here in the States yet, so this hasn’t happened
  • Best surprise: “One of a Kind”

Om…

That’s what I call this one. Apparently the Indian eggplant crockpot casserole creation from this past weekend has weighed heavy on my brain…we’ve got curry colored backdrops, vaguely Hindu architecture and a Sanskrit om. Do enjoy!

A year on…

…and I’m still thinking in terms of school years. I guess working for a university will fuck with your head like that. In any case, what a bizarre year it’s been for me. I’ve not ever had one with quite so many ups and downs. Let me tell you, it’s really been a year of the latter, too. All things considered, though, I have quite a bit that I’m happy for…and since I usually use this blog as a vehicle for complaint, I thought I’d switch it up with a nice list of things I’m glad for this year:

  • a beautiful home of my own filled with all my favourite things
  • a great coworker, friend and fellow passenger on the expressway to hell, Hannah
  • giant purple, natural wood crayons – and the Sonya that gives them to me
  • Angelar…even when we are fighting, we have more fun than two people should
  • even though she eats everything from plaster to track pants, Lolar is a pretty cool pet
  • the sound of my own shoes walking the sidewalk followed me to Rome this year
  • I can cook and finally live close enough to a Wegman’s to really enjoy that talent
  • my swanky means of conveyance, Klaus, who makes me smile (until I fill him)
  • sometimes I even get to see Dusty or Hoover…outside of the ARoB lounge
  • oh yeah…my family, which has been stellar at keeping me moving in so many ways

Of course there is more, but this seems to cover the high points.

Wow…being positive feels really odd. Uh, I think I’m going to go shout snarky things at orphaned kittens or something…

What I did this “weekend”…

…now with 100% more bullet points!

  • relaxed at Seven Springs resort with my mom & sister
  • watched some very talented young dancers
  • saw Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater inside & out
  • took my mom out to lunch
  • drove Klaus, as opposed to just commuting in him
  • picked daffodils in Talleyrand Park at midnight

Back to work tomorrow. Hopefully you’ll all enjoy your weekends as much as I enjoyed mine. As random as it was…

Special bonus! Fortified with photographic evidence.

My view of the room while waiting on the bed for anyone to come back from wherever they were.
