Audi 50 on Jalopnik
Someone in Arizona is a hero to me today. This eccentric soul seems to have taken it upon himself to import a 30 year old Audi 50, perhaps making it the only one in the states. While the Jalopnik “Nice Price or Crack Pipe” vote is skewing hard towards the latter, I think I might be tempted if I had an extra $9500 just lying around. I mean, just look at how adorable she is:
It’s like my Simone’s adorable little grandmother and not all that different from the 1982 Honda Civic that hauled my mom to the hospital when I was born – or that Sookie Stackhouse scoots around in every week on True Blood. What can I say: I have a programmed affinity for hatches.
I had a ’78 Ford Fiesta that looked very similar to that car. It was also made in Germany (I remember seeing some of the writing on the parts). The American model was produced in a factory in Cologne. That little 4 cylinder car could really rip (could catch tire in 2nd as well as 1st pulling out from a dead stop) and it was great on gas, usually around 40 mpg or better. 12″ wheels were the cheapest tires you could buy on the market too. I imagine the Audi 50 was probably its cousin.

Pat, if you’re not careful, I’m going to end up in Arizona picking this little car up. 😛 Apparently the Audi 50 is actually a restyled and packaged VW Polo. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Ford was making use of some of the same tooling and suppliers for the old Fiesta. What do you think of the new Fiesta, by the way?
